The Best Low-Impact Fitness Classes in Invercargill: An Honest Guide
Camelle Pink | MAR 28
Invercargill has more movement options than most people realise. If you’re looking for something low-impact (something that won’t wreck your joints or leave you dreading the next session) here’s an honest look at what’s out there.
Low impact doesn’t mean easy. It means your feet stay closer to the ground, the forces through your joints are reduced, and the risk of impact-related injury is lower. You can still work very hard. You just do it without the pounding.
This matters especially for women navigating peri menopause, recovery from injury, chronic pain, or simply a body that’s done with high-intensity punishment.
Yoga is well represented in Invercargill, Hot Yoga Invercargill and Soul Space in Otatara among others both offer regular classes. Great for flexibility, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation.
Pilates is available through several studios (shout out to Cat Cow Pilates which is a reformer studio, run by my friend Loren). As well as physio practices like Accelerate and Windsor Physio, both of which offer mat and reformer classes led by physiotherapists. Solid options if you’re in rehabilitation.
Barre, which is what I teach, sits in a slightly different space. It’s lower impact than most gym workouts but more dynamic than yoga. Ballet-inspired, music-driven, community-focused. It builds real strength in a way that tends to feel more like dancing than exercising.
Think about what you actually want from movement right now. If it’s rehab and recovery, a physio-led Pilates class is probably your first stop. If it’s flexibility and stillness, yoga. If it’s strength, community, and something that makes you feel good to be in your body, come try barre.
My classes run Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings and evenings at Jazz Time Studio, 44 Mersey Street. First class, book and just show up.
Cheers,
Camelle
